Early this morning Sweet Custer crossed rainbow bridge. He was warm, safe and not alone. He was a tough cat who carved out a long life in a rough part of town. He met many wonderful warm hearted people along the way who did what they could to help him get by. Of course, like so many street cats he also felt his share of indifference and disdain. The last month or so really took a toll on him. Losing his friend who shared his lunch with him everyday for years hurt him deeply.
Fortunately, being the survivor he was, he moved closer to his caregivers at the Data Center. These wonderful humans loved him and feed him well. A huge debt of gratitude goes to CAWS rescue. They were generous and kind when he needed a dental back in September to get him out of pain. Then again when I took him in to be evaluated and get some blood-work done last Thursday. I struggle to make good decisions for our community cats. It’s not always clear what is the best thing for them. In Custer’s case I decided to bring him home for some TLC and hospice care. I wanted hi to be clean, warm and safe at the end.
In his own way, he was a perfect gentleman while here with me for his last 2 days. He let me hold him and pressed his head into my hand when I went to pet him. He looked like he was going to rally under the treatment of Dr Kay Brown here at the Misfit Rescue. Unfortunately it was short lived and he went downhill fast on Saturday evening. Kim Kendall at the Date Center has offered to have him cremated and spread his ashes so he can be with his colony. If you would like to come by and pay your respects please let me know. We will celebrate Custer. Long live the king.
